The Rehabilitation Medicine Division is a fully functional rehabilitation unit that provides physical therapy and rehabilitation treatment to pulmonary cases (both in-patients and out-patients) in the form of chest physiotherapy, breathing exercises, pre and post-operative chest physiotherapy, ambulation and conditioning exercises. It also provides treatment programs to non-pulmonary cases such as strokes (CVA) post-orthopedic rehabilitation patients, pain management problems, and ailments involving musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. It conducts the COPD (Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease) Support Group Program and Bronchiectasis Support Group Program that provides pulmonary rehabilitation, education and psychological support to COPD and Bronchiectasis patients referred from the LCP Out-Patient Department and Wards. And also offer Weight Reduction Program designed for obese or overweight clients to help them successfully manage their weight as well as their overall health and General Fitness Program, a comprehensive fitness program for healthy clients who are interested in staying fit and preventing chronic diseases. 1.  Physical Therapy Internship Training Program

The program provides quality basic training in specialized physical therapy management of respiratory disorders to physical therapy interns. It provides trainees with enough basic knowledge and skills to manage patients with respiratory conditions.

Each trainee is regularly and frequently observed during patient management by staff physical therapists. Observations and immediate feedback are conducted regularly.

The program emphasized active participation by trainees in the evaluation and improvement of clinical performance with clinical instructors acting as facilitators of learning. Trainees are counselled on what strategies they may undertake to improve all aspects of clinical performance, including both cognitive and behavioral aspects. All feedbacks and performance assessments are based on outcomes rather than traditional practices.

The internship program runs for two (2) months. The trainees shall rotate among the specialty stations of the Rehabilitation Medicine Division. Each rotation shall last for 9-10 days. The specialty stations are the following:

  1. Out Patient
  2. Medical & Critical Care In-patient – Pay/Service Station (includes the Mechanically ventilated patients, Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Respiratory lntensive Care Unit (RICU), St. Therese Unit (STU)-isolation (includes all patients with attachments).
  3. Surgical Station (Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
  4. Wellness Station (COPD & Bronchiectasis Support Group) 

2.  Physical Therapy Student Center/Tour Program

Lung Center of the Philippines is the premier institution for lung and other chest diseases, providing quality health care through excellent service, training and research. As a specialized center that caters various lung and chest diseases, it is a good venue for clinical exposure especially in the field of pulmonary rehabilitation to Physical Therapy students. Center visit/tour program will help physical therapy students’ development and awareness to pulmonary rehabilitation. This program provides clinical exposure to physical therapy students in the specialized area of profession and introduces pulmonary rehabilitation as one field of physical therapy.

3.  Externship Training Program

The program provides experience and skills in the treatment and evaluation of pulmonary patients to licensed physical therapist. It also develops time-management skills and clinical decision making skills to trainees. Only licensed physical therapist can apply.

The externship program runs for two (2) months. The trainees shall rotate among the specialty stations of the Rehabilitation Medicine Division. The specialty stations are the following:

The ultimate goal of pulmonary rehabilitation is to reduce symptoms, decrease disability, increase participation in physical and social activities, and improve the overall quality of life (QOL) for patients with chronic respiratory disease. One aspect of pulmonary rehabilitation is to educate and train patients on how to properly clear secretions especially those who have difficulty in expelling phlegm.

Cough assist machine is a safe and non invasive tool for airway clearance. It is useful for those patients who are admitted due to lung disorder, neurological conditions, chronically debilitated, and elderly, with retained secretions due to weak or ineffective cough mechanism
