“To provide the highest level of safety and care to every patient,
and to inculcate such trait to every Fellow taught.”

The Division of Thoracic Anesthesia was established since the Lung Center of the Philippines opened its doors to the public in 1982. It was first headed by Dr. Magpuri T. Bataclan. Since then, it continuously provided excellent anesthesia services to a wide range of surgical procedures: from simple general surgical cases to the most complex thoracic surgical operations, adapting to the changing needs of every patient, and applying current knowledge, skills and technology to improve patient safety and overall patient satisfaction and outcome.

Critical Airway Management Unit

At the Lung Center of the Philippines, the bulk of patients are those with thoracic diseases and are critically ill. Many critically ill patients have emergent airways that securing of which cannot be delayed nor avoided. The Critical Airway Management Unit is equipped with state-of-the art airway devices- videolaryngoscopes, fiberoptic and rigid side-ventilating bronchoscopes, and jet ventilation.

Effective management of a difficult airway requires the timely availability, not only of suitable airway equipment, but also a team of Physicians- Anesthesiologists, Pulmonologists, Thoracic Surgeons, and Interventional Bronchoscopists who are all competent in critical airway management. Who are the authorities in these situations? The critical airway specialists of the Lung Center of the Philippines.

The Division of Anesthesia, also employs advanced and state-of-the art airway devices in restoring airway patency for critical airway. This is in collaboration with the Team of Thoracic Surgeons, Interventional Pulmonologists, Oromaxillofacial and ENT Surgeons.
