Division of Thoracic Surgery

The Thoracic Surgery and Anesthesia Department of the Lung Center of the Philippines is in the forefront in the management of chest diseases by offering cutting edge screening techniques to Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS). The division of thoracic surgery specializes in the surgical management of both adult and pediatric, benign or malignant thoracic pathology. Among these are lung tumors, pleural effusions, esophageal diseases, mediastinal masses, complicated inflammatory lung diseases, tracheobronchial pathology, and chest wall tumors or disorders. Treatment options are tailored for each patient after a thorough pre-operative evaluation and surgical risk assessment.

Patients are managed by a specialized team of Thoracic Surgeons, thoracic anesthesiologists and a competent nursing staff who are regularly exposed to thoracic procedures. Physical and respiratory therapists specifically trained in the care of thoracic surgery patients are also part of the team.

In addition to providing exceptional care for each patient, the members of the thoracic surgical staff dedicate a lot of their energy to support and shape surgeons enrolled in its challenging Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Training Program.

Services Offered:

Surgical management employs advanced diagnostic modalities and surgical treatment including the use of the most recent techniques in Thoracic Surgery. A surgical procedure that is ordinarily performed utilizing a large chest incision (Open Thoracotomy ) may now be performed through relatively very small incision/s (Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery) – most major resective procedures at the Lung Center is now carried out through Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).

The thoracic surgeons of the Lung Center of the Philippines are among the most experienced physicians in the country. By combining the skills of our surgeons with the latest surgical equipment, we are able to provide the most advanced surgical care available today. Innovations such as minimally invasive thoracic surgery enable us to limit pain, promote faster recovery and potentially improve surgical outcomes.

The Division of Thoracic Surgery is committed to developing the future leaders of thoracic surgery. Its faculty strives to educate and train thoracic surgical fellows to develop and enhance their surgical knowledge and skills. It is regarded as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery and holds regular training courses for both local and international thoracic surgeon.

Thoracic Surgical Training

Graduates of a PSGS-accredited five-year general surgery training program are eligible to apply for Thoracic Surgery Fellowship. Included in the training program are rotations in international facilities specializing in minimally invasive surgery and esophageal diseases.

The training will take 3 years: 1 year of core TCVS curriculum and 2 years of pathway thoracic surgical curriculum. The fellows in training are exposed to a gamut of diagnostic and therapeutic thoracic surgical procedures addressing the disease of the lung, pleura, mediastinum and chest wall.
